Q.What are the minimum system requirements for MDaemon?
A.Minimum Requirements: * Computer with a Pentium or higher processor * Microsoft Windows 95/98 or Windows NT/Server 2000 operating system * TCP/IP network protocol installed * 8 MB of memory (32 MB recommended) * Typical minimum Hard disk space required: 30MB, additional space for any mail to be stored * Internet or Intranet communication capabilities. Recommended configuration is an Intel Celeron PC with 64MB RAM and at least 10GB Hard-disk space.
Q.Can MDaemon support attachments?
A.Yes, When mail containing a file attachment is sent through MDaemon, it relays the message exactly as it was received.
Q.Why does Internet Explorer v3.0 not display the browse button?
A.Internet Explorer 3.0 will not display the browse for attachments button when composing new messages in WebPOP or will not send a message longer than four lines. The only fix is to up-grade to Internet Explorer 4.0 or use another browser such as Netscape 3.0 or 4.0.
Q.How do I view the .msg message files in MDaemon?
A.To manually look at an MDaemon message file highlight the .msg message file that you want to view. Hold down the [shift] key, on your keyboard, right click the .msg file, release the shift key. Select [Open With...], and choose Notepad or other text editor to view the message. If you are using MDaemon version 2.8 or have the MDStats Add-On, you can view the message for Queues| Queue/Stats Manager.
Q.Why do I receive Winsock error 10048?
A.Windows will generate this error when similar server applications are running concurently on the same machine. By default MDaemon uses ports 25 and 110. Verify that you do not have another server occupying the same ports.
Q.Why do I receive Winsock error 11001?
A.This Winsock error is generated when you are using a dial-up Internet connection, but haven't dialed out. Confirm that MDaemon is configured to dial the ISP. Go to [Setup], [RAS Dialup/Dialdown].
Q.How long can I make my Mailbox Name?
A.The maximum number of characters for a proper mailbox name is 29. An alias can be assigned 255 characters.
Q.Why does the envelope in the system tray turn blue?
A.The blue envelope is an indication that mail has arrived at the server since the last time MDaemon had processed.
Q.I have a yellow icon in my system tray. Why is this?
A.You have a Yellow MDaemon icon in your system tray because you are running low on Hard Drive space. This option is editable from the Miscellaneous options/Low Disk Space button.
Q.Why do I need RAS?
A.Even if you do not use RAS you will need to install the RAS services for NT. In Control Panel|Network|Services tab. Click on Add and select Remote Access Service. Right now there is no way around the RAS services being a requirement because MD is "statically linked" to with the RAS library. This means that RAS only needs to be installed but does not have to be used; a dummy modem can be created when you install RAS.
Q.What is PGP?
A.PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy and is a private-public key encryption method. MDaemon will support PGP along with most other encrytion methods.
Q.Why do messages go into the Bad message queue?
A.MDaemon will place a message in the "Bad Message Queue" for a number of reasons; if a message could not be delivered within specified time or retries; if it has incorrect or invalid email address. Common email address errors include invalid user name, non-existent or incorrect domain name, name server not available for prolonged period.
It can happen it if it has been configured to do so under Setup|Primary Domain|Unknown Local Mail, if it has reached the maximum "hop count" (set in Setup|Primary Domain|Timers), or if it has been configured in the Content Filter of MDaemon version 2.8.
Q.Why can I not read attachments sent through MDaemon?
A.When mail containing a file attachment is sent through MDaemon, it relays the message exactly as it is received. No change is made to the attachment unless it is an inbound message, and MDaemon has been configured to automatically extract encoded file attachments.
Q.Why do the mailing list messages have BadMsgQ in the FROM: field?
A.This is on purpose. This is necessary because all mail servers will send a delivery notification back to the sender of the message if something goes wrong. We need to redirect such messages away from the list itself. Therefore, unless you specify an exact address in the mailing list properties, MD will use BadMsgQ so that the message will end up in the bad message directory. To edit this, go to the list editor and select the Notifications tab. Enter an account under "Send all mail returned to the list to..."
Q.Why does my Auto Responder NOT work when I forward mail?
A.When you are forwarding the message, the autoresponse might not be sent unless the "Keep Local Copy of Forwarded Mail" setting is checked. The issue here is that unless a message is moved into the users mailbox, he/she didn''''t actually recieve it and thus, no autoresponse.
Q.Do I need a registered domain name to use MDaemon?
A.No. MDaemon can collect mail from one Internet POP3 account requiring only an account with your ISP. However, this coulf be limiting as you would not be able to enjoy the full features and benefits of domain name identity.
Q.Why does MDaemon 2.8 download old mail from my mailbox?
A.MDaemon now uses the UIDL command rather than LAST command to detect and download only unread mail from DomainPOP and MultiPOP servers. As a result of this change your MDaemon may download and re-process previously collected mail from your DomainPOP and MultiPOP servers. Read the topic *UIDL RATHER THAN LAST* in the MAJOR NEW FEATURES section of the Release notes for 2.8 for complete details on this new feature and how to avoid downloading old mail.
Q.How do I remove MDaemon from the Windows NT Service Control Manager?
A.Use the Remove Service button in the System Service Settings screen. The service name listed on this screen will be the one removed from the Service Control Manager.
Q.I no longer run MDaemon as a service, but when I click on the icon MDaemon does not start. What is wrong?
A.You need to manually edit the MDAEMON.INI file and change the following entry:
[Service]
RunAsService=No
Q.I use Windows 95. Will my operating system handle MDaemon as a service?
A.Yes. Beginning with MDaemon v2.7 full Windows 95 system service support is available. (note: Mdaemon will work as a service in all versions of Windows OS.)
Q.Once the MDaemon service is running how do I stop it?
A.Select FILE | TERMINATE APPLICATION/SERVICE.
Q.I run many virtual domains using multiple instances of MDaemon. How can I get service support in my situation?
A.It will be assumed you have MDaemon running as an application successfully under virtual domain conditions. All you have to do is go into each seperate instance through "System Service Settings" and provide a unique service name to each instance. It is recommended that you use the domain name as part of the service name so you can easily tell which domain you are configuring from the "Services" control panel applet under NT.
Q.Sometimes the MDaemon service just seems to stop under Windows NT for no apparent reason, how can this be corrected?
A.Increase the size of your paging file or add more physical memory to your computer. Your computer is running out of resources while MDaemon is attempting to process mail. NT will automatically remove services from memory if they require too many resources. You can also reduce the number of SMTP threads that MDaemon is using to help with this problem (Setup->Primary Domain->Threading)
Q.How can I setup MDaemon to process Local mail?
A.Under the Setup| Miscellaneous Options tab, check the Process Local Q After Each Inbound SMTP Session. It is usual to set the intervals to 1 minute.
Q.What is the SMTP Connection Window for?
A.An SMTP connection window appears each time a request is detected by the server from some remote client, or whenever an SMTP session needs to be initiated by the server to deliver a message to some remote host. This window keeps you informed of the current status of the specified transaction and alerts you to any problems, which may be encountered during the course of the mail session.
Q.Why is the new release of MDaemon 2.83 and not 2.80?
A.The 2.8 series is starting at 2.83 rather than 2.80 in order to maintain compatibility with certain third-party and Alt-N created add-on products. Some add-on software will not operate correctly if the revision number is less than three.
Q.Can I strip off any part of the Email Address when parsed?
A.Yes, in fact there are a couple of options when it comes to stripping an address.
Q.Why doesn''t MDaemon parse the BCC header?
A.BCC only works with SMTP mail. By definition, the carbon copy is ''Blind''. There are no headers in the message which can be parsed using the POP3 method that would provide the address. The only hope for these kinds of messages is to get the ISP to stamp the message file with the delivery information from the SMTP session during delivery to the ISP. For example, when the person sends the BCC message to the ISP hosting the mail, some of them stamp a header called ''Delivered-To:'' into the message. MDaemon could pick up on such a header if it existed.
Q.Where exactly are the dates on messages generated from?
A.The DATE: header is generated by the mail client. MD gets the date from the local computer for its RECEIVED header stamp.
Q.How many Mailing List can I have with the Trial version of MDaemon?
A.MDaemon has one “Everyone” mailing list, you can add one additional mailing list for a total of two.
Q.Why do I keep getting the message “Error Writing to Socket”?
A.If dial-up networking is uninstalled and then re-installed WITHOUT reapplying the NT service pack, MDaemon works fine.
If you reapply SP4 (or SP5) like you should do after a DUN reinstall then you will instantly get the ''''Error writing to socket'''' when sending large messages. You then have to reinstall dial-up networking.
Q.I run MDaemon as a service, yet when I click on the MDaemon icon, the program will not start under Windows NT. Why is it not working?
A.When MDaemon is configured to run as a service in Windows NT, you must start and stop it using the Services applet from the Control Panel.
Q.I tried to install MDaemon as a service under Windows NT, but got an error message. What is wrong with the program?
A.Most likely you either already have a service installed using the name you have entered into the ''''Service Name'''' field or you have used illegal characters (''''/'''', ''''\'''') in the name you are trying to use.
Q.My MDaemon is configured to start as a service. So how do I start the service?
A.WINDOWS NT:
In the control panel, under the "Services" applet, there is a button called START. Select the name you have assigned to the MDaemon service and click the START button. Alternatively, if you have the service configured to start automatically you can reboot the machine to start it.
WINDOWS 95:
Click on Start; Programs; MDaemon (may be Alt-N MDaemon); and MDaemon Server.
Q.When I run MDaemon as a service it will not move mail into my users mailboxes and/or it parses the same set of messages endlessly! Why is it doing this?
A.This is likely due to a permissions problem. Make certain that the logon you are using (LocalSystem or whatever) has read and write access to all the directories for your users and to the directories where it''s own files are kept (ie.. the \mdaemon\* hierarchy).
Q.How long can a password be?
A.Due to the fact that MDaemon stores the POP passwords in an encrypted state the actual maximum length of a POP password is 12 characters.
Q.What is the POP Connection Window for?
A.A POP connection window appears each time a request is detected by the server from some remote POP client. This window keeps you informed of the current status of the specified transaction and alerts you to any problems which may be encountered during the course of the mail session
Q.What is this WP2WC.EXE file in my APP directory?
A.This is a utility to convert your WebPOP address books and custom folders to WorldClient Standard format. To use it run WP2WC from the APP directory and follow the instructions which will appear.
Q.I get an "Object Windows Exception: Create Failed For Window XXXXX", why?
A.This means that you have too high a setting for your concurrent threads (SMTP and/or POP). Your computer cannot support that many sessions threads being ongoing at the same time. You need to reduce those numbers. Setup->Primary Domain->Threading screen
Also, it can happen if the you open a GUI editor (like the account editor, list editor, etc...) and leave it open for a long time. These editor windows should not be left open unattended. Mail sessions operating in the background will be forced to share processor time with these open editor windows which will adversely effect system performance.
MDaemon is capable of out performing the level of resources available to your computer. It is possible in MDaemon to allow the creation of too many simultaneous session threads. When this happens the number of active sessions can exceed that which your amount of RAM or other system resources can handle. You will typically see a "Create fail for window" error when this is occurring.
Q.Why is IP Cache not Automatically Caching IPs?
A.In newer versions of MDaemon, the MX packet also returns an A record. This is why your IP Cache is not caching; because MDaemon never actually does an A-record lookup.
Q.Why does MDaemon take up 100% of the CPU?
A.If you are running MDaemon as an application and have it installed into a directory with a "." in it (ex: c:\domain.com\mdaemon) , there is a chance that MDaemon will lock up when delivering remote mail. As a work around, move your Remote queue, Retry queue, RAW queue, LAN queue and Local queue folders to something without a ".". This is done by editing the mdaemon.ini file in the directories section. This problem will be fixed in MDaemon 3.0 due out in early 2000.
Q.I have set up a Routing Rule to include 10 recipients, but only 7 are getting the Email, why?
A.The MDaemon Routing Rules option has a maximum of 255 characters. It may be that you are exceeding this limit. In fact, you may find that if you were to delete the first entry then the eigth would start to get the Emails as well. To work around this limit, try creating two routing rules.
Q.Why do I get a blue screen while MDaemon is running?
A.If you get the blue screen error while running MDaemon, check to see if you are using a STB vision video driver. This error occurs in the STB vision driver when you have a full screen DOS session window active while MDaemon is running. If you don''t make the DOS session window full screen you will not experience the Blue Screen. The Development Team has yet to track down the miscommunication here but will continue to research the problem.
Q.Does MDaemon support POP before Send?
A.Yes. With this feature enabled, before a person who claims to be a local user can send a message they must have checked their mail within the number of minutes specified.
NOTE: This option will not work with WorldClient Standard. WorldClient Standard does not support the POP3 Command.
Q.Why does MDaemon keep shutting down?
A.If you have the "Enable POP3 Expansion Threading" switch turned OFF you could experience a shutdown. This switch needs to be always ON in MD 2.8. It is in Setup|Primary Domain|Threads.
Q.What is the WSANENOBURS error?
A.Under Windows 9x, the MS TCP has a low default for the "MaxConnections". If the number of connections exceeds this default, WinSOCK will return the WSAENOBUFS error. By introducing the key below to the registry, (and restarting Windows) the number of buffers is increased and the error disappears.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControl\ SetServices\VxD\MSTCP] "MaxConnections"="256"
Q.What is a Transient Delivery Error?
A.Transient Deliver Errors are errors that will or could be fixed at a later time. For example, "30 second wait for protocol timeout exceeded." Is a transient error. Transient errors let the mail server sending the message know that it should try again at a later time.
Q.Why did MDaemon use ''Company.mail'' as my primary domain?
A.MDaemon will use ''Company.mail'' as a default primary domain name if none other is specified. However, the usual practice is to use lmail as a default. This is short and simple.
Q.Can I have MDaemon use the DNS server in my TCP/IP setup?
A.Yes. Several controls have been added to the DNS tab, one being a switch that gives you the option to use the internal Windows controlled DNS server IP addresses.
Q.Does MDaemon support IMAP4?
A.Yes MDaemon now supports IMAP4 protocol. This protocol is similar to POP but is much more powerful. It allows server-based mail operations and is gaining in popularity. IMAP makes it possible for users to store their messages and organize their mail folders on the server instead of their local machine, thus increasing the portability of their email access.
Q.I upgraded my OS from Windows 9x to Windows 2000 and now MDaemon will not start
A.You will need to edit your MDaemon.ini file. This file is found in your MDaemon\app directory. Search for the section called RUNASSEVICE=YES, change the YES to a NO and save this file.
Start MDaemon from the Program group. Once you have MDaemon running, click on Setup| System Service Settings…, Install your MDaemon as a service.
Q.Why am I having exactly a two minute IMAP4 timeout with MS Outlook 2000?
A.There is a known issue when using Outlook 2000’s IMAP and you have MDaemon’s option IMAP NOOP Commands Trigger 1 Minute Inactivity Timeout selected. Outlook 98, Outlook Express or Netscape do not have this problem. Outlook 2000 reacts with the error Your IMAP server has closed the connection. This may occur if you have left the connection idle for too long.
Q.Will MDaemon 3.0 support WebPOP?
A.The feature set new to the 3.x series has required changes to several supporting DAT file formats including the userlist.dat file. As a result of these changes the 3.x series is completely incompatible with the discontinued WebPOP series of products. We now provide WorldClient Standard with MDaemon for a more robust Web-based Email solution.
Q.Whenever I enable the spam blocker engine, I get freeze-ups, why?
A.In the current version, the Spam Blocker utilizes blocking socket calls. Windows freezes the entire application until blocking calls return. That is the reason for the apparent freeze of the GUI. By running your own local DNS server you can reduce this delay to a minimum.
Q.Does the addition of rules to the content filter significantly affect MD performance?
A.The answer is yes. This was a concern during the development of the content filter feature, and unfortunately, it could not be avoided. Processing the messages does have a performance cost.
Q.Why does MDaemon disappear from the system tray and stop running?
A.If you are running MDaemon as a service and have it installed into a directory with a "." in it (ex: c:\domain.com\mdaemon), there is a chance that MDaemon will crash when delivering remote mail. As a work around, move your Remote queue, Retry queue, RAW queue, LAN queue and Local queue folders to something without a ".". This is done by editing the mdaemon.ini file in the directories section. This problem will be fixed in MDaemon 3.0 due out in early 2000.
Q.Why doesn''t the Content Filter work when I receive mail via MultiPOP?
A.Whenever you collect mail via the MultiPOP option, those messages, which are downloaded, are placed directly into the account, by- passing the message queue and Content Filter system.
Q.What is a Permanent Delivery Error?
A.Permanent errors are not fixable. For example, "user not found" is a permanent error. Permanent errors let the mail server know that no matter how many times delivery is attempted it will always fail. Another example would be that the domain name part could be incorrect or invalid.
Q.Does MDaemon support Priority Mail Scheduling?
A.Yes. Under MDaemon 3.0 you will be able to set importance ''''levels'''' - from 0 (highest) to 99 (lowest) - to each mail message that falls into certain categories. Queued mail is delivered based on these levels. So, mail from the boss is always sent before bulk mailing list mail, etc. With Priority Mail Scheduling the user can assign values to certain mails according to what he/she considers to be important mail.
Q.Are there any limits to the number of rules or number of actions per rule in the Content Filter?
A.There is a max of 15 test strings per condition, 15 conditions per rule, and 15 actions per rule. There is no limit on the number of rules.
Q.Why did MDaemon create aliases when I created a new Secondary Domain?
A.As part of the multi-domain process, when you create a secondary domain the following aliases will be setup to automatically:
MDaemon@secondarydomain.com = MDaemon@primarydomain.com
listserv@secondarydomain.com = MDaemon@primarydomain.com
listserver@secondarydomain.com = MDaemon@primarydomain.com
list-serv@secondarydomain.com = MDaemon@primarydomain.com
These aliases will be automatically removed if the secondary domain is deleted.
Q.What is IMAP?
A.IMAP-based Email gives you access to electronic mail that remains stored on a mail server until you delete it. You can act on Email stored on an IMAP server from your computer at home and from another computer at the office. When traveling, you can get to your mail from your laptop or from any computer with a Web browser. All this without having to transfer messages or files back and forth among the computers.
Q.Why am I having trouble using Outlook NetFolders through MDaemon?
A.It is likely an important header is being stripped out of the messages. This can be corrected with an adjustment in MDaemon.
Q.Why is the license agreement blank when I install MDaemon?
A.This is caused by not having a temp directory or by not having the path to your temp directory set.
Q.I am getting the error 10055 Out of buffer space Why?
A.If you are getting error code 10055 Out of buffer space and are running MDaemon on a Windows 9x version, you can edit your registry to attempt to correct this problem. I suggest you back it up first. Click on Start / Run, for the command line enter regedit and press Enter. Go to the: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet
\Services\VxD\MSTCP] directory. Change the maxconnections field to: MaxConnections=1024
Another reason for this happening could be that you may have had a denial of service attack. A well known example is the notepad.exe trojan (file size 118K) could be halting or slowing the system services.
Q.When I want to add a new user to a mailing list that exists in MDaemon’s userlist.dat file, MDaemon seems only to list about the first 250 users. The rest of the users do not show up in the drop down menu
A.This is a resource saving measure. If you must have the listboxes show all users set the following key in the MDaemon.ini file.
[Special]
MaxAccountManagerEntries=XXX (set to 0 to show all entries).
Q.I am using Win2000 and MDaemon, but I can’t get Outlook 2000 to work on my computer now that I’ve switched to IMAP, what happened?
A.When you are running all three programs on the same computer, the IMAP function will not work with Outlook 2000. If, however, MDaemon and Win2000 are running on a separate computer, your Outlook will work with no problems.
Q.Can I set a message with High Precedence?
A.With just a few adjustments to the MDaemon Content Filter System, you can decide who has the highest precedence through your Email System.
Q.My Outlook mail client will not download a message that I know is there, what is wrong?
A.If the message has header fields that have non-ascii characters (such as foreign characters with accents, etc) OE refuses to display them. This is a Microsoft bug.
Q.Why are the messages that I send with Outlook 2000 not in the IMAP sent box?
A.Your Sent Items, Drafts, and Deleted Items folders cannot reside on an IMAP server. Outlook 2000 requires that all special folders exist in the default store. IMAP cannot act as the default store because it cannot contain the non-mail special folders.
You can simulate a server-side Sent Items folder by creating a rule in the Rules Wizard that copies all outgoing mail to the IMAP folder of your choice. There is no workaround for Drafts and Deleted Items.
Q.What is LDAP? (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
A.In general terms, LDAP is the Internet standard way of storing data in a searchable database format. It''s like the Yellow Pages. You can organize any type of data there and search and retrieve it. It''s perfect for things like address books and account databases. The benefits of LDAP are that it is supported by mail clients now for address books and it is fast becoming the industry norm for data storage.
Q.What if I''m not concerned about security or the privacy of my Email using APOP?
A.The issue is bigger than just your account and mail file. If a hacker gains entrance to a computer via your user id password, the hacker has an easier time of compromising other accounts on the entire system.
Q.Why is my MDaemon Content Filter NOT scanning my message attachments?
A.Please check and see if the attachment was sent in the Uuencode format. MDaemon’s content filter supports MIME encoded attachments.
Q.Does MDaemon work with Windows ME?
A.Yes, all of the Deerfield.com products are compatible with the Windows ME operating system from Microsoft. They have been fully tested and we have not experienced any problems with connection to any of the software in our suite of products.
Q.What''s the reason for APOP?
A.Every time you connect to your mail server, you send your username and password across the network in clear text. This is a popular way for hackers to see your password using a ''sniffer'' program. With APOP, your password is encrypted while being transmitted over the network.
Q.What is an SMS Gateway?
A.SMS (Short Message Service) is a service for sending messages of up to 160 characters to mobile phones that use Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication. GSM and SMS service is primarily available in Europe. SMS is similar to paging. However, SMS messages do not require the mobile phone to be active and within range and will be held for a number of days until the phone is active and within range. SMS messages are transmitted within the same cell or to anyone with roaming capability. They can also be sent to digital phones from a Web site equipped with PC Link or from one digital phone to another. Typical uses of SMS include:
